Walking the Isle of Wight's Chalk Downs
The Isle of Wight lies off England's southern coast and is the perfect place for hiking and cycling. I explored its magnificent chalk downs in May.
Running 15 miles from Exeter to Dartmoor
I signed up for a 20-mile trail race so I figured it was time I started increasing my running distance and including big hills. Rather suddenly, without much planning...
Review: Decathlon Winter Leather Hiking Boots
For years, I thought that the fluff on the top of boots was a fashion thing. It wasn't until I bought my first pair of fluff-topped hiking boots back in 2006 that I realised there's a lot more to it than wanting to look like you've wandered out of Dr. Zhivago.
Just a Little Bit Further — the joys of trail running
I don't need to aim for a time of a distance to motivate me when I'm trail running, curiosity is the driving force and it so often rewards magnificently. I don't think I've ever had a 'bad' trail run. Even this one, complete with skittish bulls and a 34% gradient, was a true joy.
Snoozing in a Cornish Bell Tent: a review of Higher Pendeen Camping
Only in the morning could I see the full extent of Higher Pendeen's wilding. The field is lined with unmown grasses and wildflowers and large central chucks of land are the same. It's basically accommodation managed by bees, butterflies and all the other creatures that see a blade of grass as quite a long journey. It's glorious.
St Mawgan's Japanese Garden: getting Zen in Cornwall
Deep in Cornwall’s steep valleys lie plenty of secrets but none perhaps so extraordinary as the Japanese Garden in St Mawgan. I came here on book research and felt like I wanted to stay forever.
7 Ted Talks for Adventure Inspiration
There's nothing quite like a bit of adventure to shake us out of our routines, to blow the dust off our habit-forming brains and remind us that we are not only bursting with life, but that we are capable of extraordinary things. Of extraordinary endurance, mental resilience and determination.
Sitting Down with Nature: the sound and the silence
I sit down in a deserted woodland and wait. Of course, it's only humans that are absent apart from me, because I'm soon visited by other creatures. There is much to be gained in the sound and the silence.
Embracing the Joy of Trail Running: getting out of my head and into my body
Trail running brings me into the present moment in a way running on tarmac never did. Many of the trails I've been running on here are veritable obstacle courses. Tree roots weave across the earthen paths, raised perfectly to capture an unsuspecting foot. Mud stretches across the trails like a cat taking a sun bath. Beech trees reach their downy leaves to head height, silent sideline supporters going for the high five.
Review: The Eco-Friendly Youman Tee (on Kickstarter now)
I agreed to test out and review the Youman Tee for one simple reason: Youman is a company that has taken on the burden of creating a product where sustainability is put at the heart of the design, not just the heart of the marketing. As an added bonus, the t-shirt is fantastic. Check out my review on this innovative tee!
30km East Dartmoor Ride Route (with map)
Dartmoor is a place of striking granite tors, pockets of temperate rainforest, wide open moorland and secluded river valleys. There are endless cycle routes to explore thanks to the lanes, byways, bridle paths and open moor that you can explore with reckless abandon. This is a fantastic 30km ride in the east of the national park.

Hiking and Cycling from Okehampton Train Station
Okehampton train station is re-opening for daily trains in late 2021 and that means the numerous trails passing through the town are even easier to access! Hiking and cycling trails that use the town include seven named ways, many of which are multi-day.Not bad for a fairly isolated moor town!
10 Outdoor Books to Get You Through February
Bored of February already? Stuck indoors and need some inspiration to carry you through lockdown? Here are some of my favourite outdoor and nature books to transport your mind to somewhere better.
Not Every Ride/Walk/Whatever is Going to be #Amazing
With only one whole day a week in which to go on a Long Expedition with a part-time sun and fickle weather, the pressure to plan and execute a glorious adventure can run away with itself. But not every ride and walk are going to blow you away and sometimes it's the smaller things that provide the joy.
How to Hike the East Devon Way - 40 Miles of Countryside Glory
The East Devon Way is the secret half-sibling of the South West Coast Path. This 38-mile path starts in Exmouth and winds its way though the East Devon countryside, over hills, across fields and through the quaintest of villages to finish in Lyme Regis on the Jurassic Coast.
6 Tips for Planning an Enjoyable Bike Ride
I don't find it too difficult to plan a bike ride, but I do find it difficult to have faith in my planning skills. I'm terrible for underestimating the steepness and length of hills - last Sunday I spent 20 minutes of a 3 hour ride going up one, incredibly long, steep hill - and I'm equally awful at remembering to let my stomach have a say in the preparation.Every time I go out for a jaunt and forget something, I think, 'the moment I get home I will write a damn checklist!'
Exeter Cycle Routes: the Exe Estuary Trail
This is a trail likely familiar to most two-wheeling residents. It actually stretches from Exmouth on the east coast of the estuary, all the way to Dawlish on the west coast. Exeter lies in the middle of the trail, upriver, allowing you to chose either direction and reach the sea with relative ease.
Naples: a City of Grit and Bones
We roam the streets for the atmosphere alone. It’s frenetic and keeping a straight line is impossible. Every few seconds I’m dodging scooters, other tourists and even cars. Driving around here seems like an impossibility given that you could barely have three people walking abreast.
Cycling the Grand Western Canal from Tiverton to Holcombe Rogus
As Devon bike rides go, cycling the Grand Western Canal from Tiverton is an exceptionally beautiful one. 22 miles and flat, it's a slice of paradise that I'd never known existed.
